Why Crib Safety?New parents must consider crib safety. You have so much going on, why spend your precious time thinking about crib safety? Last year over 80 children died from nursery products and over 66,400 were injured and required hospital treatment.
Crib safety must become the number one concern of all mothers and fathers. Unfortunately crib safety is not number one on parents minds because year after year more infants die in accidents involving cribs.
Infants and babies spend the majority of their lives sleeping. Using our most conservative educated guess, baby spends 4,350 hours during the first year of life in their crib. This averages out to be 11.9 hours per day. 4,350 hours to wiggle and wriggle, pick and pull, roll and kick. 4,350 hours to become injured or worse by the object that is suppose to be keeping them safe and sound.
On February 28, 2008, Consumer Report reported that the Consumer Products Safety Commission released it's annual report. This annual report, "Nursery Product-Related Injuries and Death Among Children Under Five," was not encouraging. The latest data to be available was 2006. In 2006, children under five suffered approximately 66,400 injuries due to nursery products and these children required hospital treatment. From 2002 to 2004, the latest data available, there were approximately 80 deaths per year associated with nursery products and children under five.
The previous reporting period 2005, showed 59,800 injuries due to nursery products and these children required hospital treatment. From 2001 to 2003, there were approximately 61 deaths per year associated with nursery products and children under five. 6,600 more injuries per year and 19 more deaths per year. We are definitely going in the wrong direction.
In May, 2007, an eight month old baby girl died in Bryan, Texas. The safety pegs for her crib were uninstalled. And in July, 2008, an eight month old baby boy died in Tallahassee, Florida. The safety pegs in his crib failed. Both babies suffocated.
We strongly recommend you to buy a new crib and pay the store to build it professionally. Babies not only become injured by old cribs, they become injured and killed by improperly installed crib hardware as well.
